The
Comparison
Consider some of the
differences when clients try to compare various
companies or prices.
Look for a qualified kitchen cabinet
manufacturer. Check with the Registrar of Contractors or
ask for their ROC number.
Compare construction
techniques: Drawer
boxes - Are the drawer boxes constructed with
an attractive, durable dovetail joint or a simple butt
joint Drawer
fronts - Are the drawer fronts applied as an
additional piece and adhered to the drawer box or is it
incorporated into the box as the front edge to cut the
cost? Hardware
- Examine the quality of the hinges and glides for the
doors and drawers. Will these hold up over time
with normal use and expected weight in the
cabinetry? Top
coat finish - Does the manufacturer apply only
a cellulose lacquer or is it a conversion varnish, which
is the hardest, longest lasting, durable finish in the
industry and will have your cabinetry look like new for
many years?
Furniture is
designed to be replaced. Cabinetry should be
designed for the life expectancy of your home. A
homeowner will always have the option to reface quality
built cabinetry by choosing a new color stain or change
out the style of doors, drawers and hardware to refresh
the look years down the road. The construction of
the cabinetry, however, should remain intact and built
with durability in
mind.

Furniture
vs. Cabinetry
With the current economic
situation concerning many builders and homeowners;
the question often comes up how to compare a
quality custom cabinetry product like Wood Whims
produces to other cabinetry that is out there on
the market. Unfortunately, with custom
cabinetry, there isn't an easy "apples to apples"
comparison. There are also furniture makers
who have joined the kitchen cabinetry trade to
bolster output at their manufacturing
facilities. While the word furniture
often conjures up visions of finally crafted
works, it is the craftsman ship of these products
that we all admire. Furniture is designed to
follow the current trend and since trends change
rapidly, it is often not designed to last over
time. Ask yourself a few simple
questions: * When was the
last time you replaced a furniture piece because
it was looking old or worn? * Have you ever had
to repair a piece of furniture because the
finished (or fabric) was damaged by a sweating
glass of water or some spilled cleaner or
liquid? * Do you expect your cabinetry to last
for more than the next ten years?
This goes to the miss-notion of the
word furniture. Today, most furniture is made to
be more disposable and for a much shorter life
span rather that meant to become an heirloom as in
the days of our ancestors. Cabinets, on the
other hand, are designed to endure years of abuse
so that future homeowners also have trouble free
cabinetry. Although trends do come
and go, good cabinetry is designed in such a way
so as to become timeless. It too can be
designed to become pleasing to the eye which is
what we associate with our furniture purchases.
The finishes used today provide the end user
with maintenance free workmanship. Chemical
resistant finishes are now so tough that even
water or lacquer thinners cannot damage them.
Wood Whims uses a conversion varnish process
designed for its durability. This is the
combination of features that is the sign of a good
cabinet maker such as Wood Whims.
"The gratification of a job well
done is the excitement of the customer once they
see the installed product for the first
time. They get to see all the hours of
meetings with their cabinet company come to
life. For me, however, it is going back to a
job years later for additional cabinets and seeing
that the finish is just as fresh as the day we
first installed the set. Such was my
excitement after visiting a home we installed 14
years ago. Now, that is quality."
